To all of you who sent feedback to my office this week about Monday’s comments to CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla on Coffee prices, today’s market update is for you.

“It sounds like you’re telling everyone to buy coffee!” was the collective theme of most respondents.

No, I was not telling everyone to buy coffee. We’ve spent the last 6 month’s alerting our clients and even newsletter readers to the fact that the Brazilian crop will be monstrous in 2012 and that call selling is the preferred method of monetizing this fact. Continue reading

Coffee It was only this Spring that coffee prices touched a 14 year high from a combination of lower supplies and an optimistic economic outlook. Specifically, coffee prices were responding to a marked shortage of high quality, washed arabica beans. These are the beans primarily used in higher end gourmet coffees such as Starbucks.

While Stock Traders Wring Hands over Debt Deal, Coffee Prices Eye Harvest

As Washington heads into the final turn of a long and grueling debt battle, everybody has an opinion of what should be done and nobody can predict how markets will react. We are not going to right a commentary piece adding our two cents to the pot. There are hundreds of sources for this on the net. Nor are we going to pretend that the debt ceiling situation does not exist.

Instead, we can simply focus on collecting premiums in markets that would be least affected by the events in Washington DC this weekend.
