The Problem with Gold (And the Opportunity for You)

Of all of the commodities on the board, there is none more emotionally charged than gold.  People buy a contract of sugar because demand is high and/or supply is low and they think that will pull prices higher. People buy a contract of gold for many, many, many different reasons. And rarely is it directly related to supply and demand.

For that reason, gold (and to a lesser extent, it’s cousin silver) have to be approached differently than other commodities when selling options. Continue reading

CordIf there has ever been a more controversial, misunderstood, overregulated, in and out of vogue tool for “forecasting” certain commodities prices,  it is seasonal tendencies.

There was an author that came out with a book several years ago that made himself semi-famous overnight by publishing a series of “can’t lose” commodity trades based on seasonal tendencies. To all of you who sent feedback to my office this week about Monday’s comments to CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla on Coffee prices, today’s market update is for you.

“It sounds like you’re telling everyone to buy coffee!” was the collective theme of most respondents.
